COMPENSATION GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES

 

This guidelines and procedures summary supplements City Policy 3.01.03, PERSONNEL SERVICES, CLASSIFICATION AND COMPENSATION.  Additional information is provided in Council-approved compensation plans or collective bargaining agreements.  Each plan or agreement includes a pay structure, which is a collection of pay grades that have either salary ranges or one or more salary steps. 

 

Procedures will differ between structures with steps and structures with ranges.  Also, depending on duties, required training and compensation levels, some positions are exempt from the overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).  This, too, will cause procedures to vary between the plans. 

 

The chart below shows which pay plans have steps vs. ranges, and whether the covered jobs are FLSA exempt or non-exempt.  It also summarizes the routine hiring rate and within-guideline hire rates that do not require mayoral approval.
