RESOLUTION NO. 7 OF 2013

A JOINT RESOLUTION

IN SUPPORT OF AN ANTI-BULLYING

PUBLIC EDUCATION INITIATIVE IN

SALT LAKE CITY

 

WHEREAS,                      bullying is a community-wide problem that can happen at any time, regardless of race, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender, physical and mental ability; and 

 

WHEREAS,                      bullying affects everyone – individuals who bully, individuals who have been bullied, and individuals who witness bullying; and

 

WHEREAS,                      bullying takes place through different means, including verbal, physical and electronic; and

 

WHEREAS,                      an estimated 13 million children in America will be bullied this year. Three million of those students will be absent from school because of bullying; and

 

WHEREAS,                      bullying often does not happen as an isolated incident or isolated context. There may be multiple bullies and multiple victims; and

 

WHEREAS,                      bullying has negative impacts, including substance abuse, mental health issues and suicide; and

 

WHEREAS            Salt Lake City has organized community groups to develop a comprehensive, citywide anti-bullying public education initiative with a goal of making bullying unacceptable.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
That Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake City School District and others have been significant partners in an effort to bring the problem of bullying to the forefront and to take steps in reducing bullying in our community.

 

 Be it Further Resolved

The Salt Lake City Mayor and the Salt Lake City Council hereby commit to support the goals of an anti-bullying public education initiative in Salt Lake City.
