RESOLUTION 5 OF 2017

Whereas, Outdoor Retailer and its participants have been gracious guests and have promoted Salt Lake City and Utah as places where people can enjoy the natural landscape around them; and
Whereas, Outdoor Retailer indicated it will fulfill its contractual obligations with the Salt Palace Convention Center through the summer 2018 trade show, but has decided that Salt Lake City will not be considered for hosting shows after then; and
WHEREAS, until February 16, 2017, Salt Lake City appeared to meet the criteria for bidding on future Outdoor Retailer shows, in particular the criterion requiring that a bidding city be aligned with the outdoor industry’s core values; and
Whereas, Salt Lake City’s residents, businesses and government leaders, by their actions over many decades, have demonstrated they share the outdoor industry’s core values, including:
a. The City’s long history of protecting the Central Wasatch Front watershed. For more than 100 years, Salt Lake City has been a responsible steward of a healthy watershed necessary for a growing population to thrive, while also recognizing the landscape’s restorative effects on us all.
b. The City’s commitment to work with the private sector, other cities, Salt Lake County, the State of Utah, and the federal government to reach agreement and begin implementing the goals outlined in the Mountain Accord.
c. The guiding principles in Plan Salt Lake – the city-wide master plan to guide future growth in Salt Lake City to the year 2040 – that commit the City to protect and minimize peoples’ impact on the natural environment, while providing easy access and opportunities to recreate and enjoy nature; and
WHEREAS, protecting the natural landscape for everyone’s enjoyment has always required a serious working relationship among local, state, and federal levels of government; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City is the home of many outdoor recreation, equipment, retail, and other outdoor-oriented businesses; and
WHEREAS, the City Council appreciates and values the efforts of those businesses to protect public lands and add to the economic vitality of Salt Lake City and the entire state of Utah; and
WHEREAS, successfully protecting public lands throughout Utah requires that all of us must work together in a civil and productive manner.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
that the City Council wishes Outdoor Retailer and the Outdoor Industry Association well; looks forward to working with them through the remaining three trade shows to be held here; and hopes that Outdoor Retailer and the Outdoor Industry Association will reconsider the decision not to include Salt Lake City in future bids for the trade show; and that the Outdoor Industry Association join the City Council in a long-term strategy to protect and preserve public lands which are precious to all Utahns and people nationwide.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
that the City Council will continue to work
with residents, neighbors, businesses, governments and other organizations to
provide recreational opportunities that conserve the landscape and its bounty
for future generations.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
that the City Council will actively seek out the involvement and help of the outdoor industry and local outdoor-focused businesses to stand with us as we work to achieve the compatible objectives of vigilantly protecting our environment and building an economy that encourages businesses that champion similar goals.
