RESOLUTION 49 OF 2012
RESOLUTION AFFIRMING SALT LAKE CITY AS A WELCOMING CITY
THAT RESPECTS THE INNATE DIGNITY OF ALL PEOPLE
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City was permanently settled in 1847 by pioneer immigrants from many lands seeking peace, refuge and community, which continues to the present day; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has long been recognized as a hospitable and welcoming place where people, families and institutions thrive and the contributions of all are celebrated and valued; and
WHEREAS, residents of Salt Lake City live up to the highest American values of acceptance and equality and treat newcomers with decency and respect, creating a vibrant, livable community for all; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City is committed to continue building a welcoming and neighborly atmosphere in our community, where all are welcome, accepted and integrated; and
WHEREAS, policies that negate opportunities for contributions to our community in the fullest capacity hinder Salt Lake City’s prosperity and compromises our commitment to the American values here stated; and
WHEREAS, community efforts that promote understanding and collaboration between our native-born and foreign-born community members are crucial in encouraging and preserving Salt Lake City’s welcoming environment; and
WHEREAS, fostering a welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity or place of origin, enhances Salt Lake City’s cultural fabric, economic growth, global competitiveness and overall prosperity for current and future generations; and
WHEREAS, the Welcoming Utah initiative aims to build cooperation, respect, and compassion among all in our community;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED
the Salt Lake City Council and the Mayor of Salt Lake City do hereby recognize the Welcoming Utah initiative as helping to unite our community and ensure that all are welcome here. We urge all residents of Salt Lake City to do their part in reaching out to and welcoming all who live in and visit our City.
