Resolution No. 47 of 2018

Supporting Execution of Olympic Expression of Interest Agreement

 

WHEREAS, the residents of Salt Lake City have long enjoyed the benefits of the City’s investments in sport and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and the honor of being a host city of a Winter Games has changed the City’s residents’ lives in many positive ways; and  

WHEREAS, because of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, rail and bus transit became a reality in Salt Lake City and the system continues to grow and will expand even more in the future. In addition, the number of hotels increased dramatically and is projected to increase even more to meet demands of Utah’s increase in tourism. Most important, Salt Lake City, and Utah, remain committed to the idea that we all are citizens of the world, and our fellow citizens are welcome here; and

WHEREAS, the Council is committed to continued investment in the needs of Salt Lake City to continue cultivating a uniquely diverse community with seamless connections between unique neighborhoods, attractions, and a newly revitalized downtown. Such investment includes a new international airport that will open in September 2020 and other public investments that will create a background that athletes and visitors can appreciate and enjoy during a future Olympic Winter Games; and

WHEREAS, with Salt Lake City’s existing infrastructure and proven capability, the Council is confident that Salt Lake City can host an outstanding Games in the future that are fiscally responsible and sustainable. As such, many aspects of the Games, such as the culture and education programs and city-wide celebrations will help promote Olympism and Paralympism among our residents; and

WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has been coordinating with the State of Utah and the Utah Sports Commission to submit to the United States Olympic Committee a bid to host future Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games for 2030 or 2034; and

WHEREAS, to support the City’s bid efforts, the Honorable Governor Gary R Herbert of the State of Utah, along with the President and President Elect of the Utah Senate, and Speaker and Speaker Elect of the Utah House of Representatives, have delivered a letter to the City expressing the State’s commitment to enter into an agreement to indemnify the City in a manner similar to the 2002 Winter Games; and

WHEREAS, in order to submit its bid to the United States Olympic Committee, the City must enter into an agreement of Expression of Interest with the United State Olympic Committee; and 

WHEREAS, the attached agreement has been prepared to accomplish said purposes;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, as follows:

1.     It does hereby supports the execution and delivery of the following, subject to such minor changes which do not materially affect the rights and obligations of the City thereunder :

Future Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games U.S. Candidate City Expression of Interest Agreement

                                     

2.         The effective date of the agreement shall be the date it is signed and recorded (where applicable) by all parties to the agreement.
