JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 39 of 2015

 

A Joint Resolution of the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor Recognizing Trujillo, Peru as a Sister City to Salt Lake City

 

      WHEREAS, there are approximately 15,000 to 20,000 Peruvians living in the State of Utah, making the group the second largest Latin American minority in the state; and

      WHEREAS, Salt Lake City and the city of Trujillo, Peru entered into a Friendship City relationship in May 2005; and

      WHEREAS, since entering into a Friendship City relationship, Salt Lake City and Trujillo residents and institutions have participated in a number of high level social, cultural, educational, and economic development programs and partnerships; and

      WHEREAS, activities between the two cities are ongoing and active today,  with officials from the State of Utah’s Governor’s Office of Economic Development meeting with political and business leaders of Trujillo in Lima, Peru as recently as September 2013; and

WHEREAS, there was a request at the December 2013 meeting of the Sister Cities Board by board member Jorge Arce-Larreta that Salt Lake City enter into a Sister City relationship with Trujillo, Peru; and

WHEREAS, Salt Lake City typically requires that a Friendship City relationship be in place and active for a minimum of three years before a request to become a Sister City can be submitted to the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor; and

WHEREAS, the Sister Cities Board and city staff have determined that the Friendship City relationship between Salt Lake City and Trujillo, Peru meet the requirements for becoming a Sister Cities relationship; and

      WHEREAS, on June 16, 2014, the Sister Cities Board voted to approve a recommendation to the Mayor and City Council to approve creating a Sister Cities relationship with Trujillo, Peru.

NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Salt Lake City Council and Salt Lake City Mayor hereby recognize Trujillo, Peru and Salt Lake City, Utah as Sister Cities.
