RESOLUTION No. 31 of 2015

(Renaming the Jordan River Oxbow at 900 South as the Fred & Ila Rose Fife Wetland Preserve)

 

      WHEREAS, Salt Lake City Code Chapter 3.65 provides that the City may name certain parcels of City-owned land after an individual, an organization, or a group of similarly situated individuals; and

      WHEREAS, under Chapter 3.65 land, regardless of acreage, is considered a major asset the naming of which generally requires City Council approval; and

WHEREAS, the Administration has requested that the City Council rename the Jordan River Oxbow at 900 South the “Fred & Ila Rose Fife Wetland Preserve” to honor the Fifes for their community service and many significant contributions that have enhanced the quality of life and well being of Salt Lake City; and

WHEREAS, Fred Fife has been involved with the Poplar Grove Community Council since the 1970s, serving terms in the Utah State House of Representatives from 1999-2002 and the Utah State Senate from 2004-2008, serving on the Salt Lake City Planning Commission from 1996-1999, and has been a dedicated advocate for projects supporting the Jordan River; and

WHEREAS, for over three decades Ila Rose Fife was a tireless education advocate for Westside students, serving on the Salt Lake City School District Board of Education for 16 years, serving six years on the Salt Lake City Public Library Board of Directors, serving as President of the Utah School Boards Association, and volunteering throughout her adult life in her local LDS ward to expand opportunities for youth in the community; and

WHEREAS, Fred and Ila Fife achieved personal and organizational excellence that represents Salt Lake City in a positive manner; and

      WHEREAS, Fred Fife has consented to the proposed name change for himself and on behalf of his late wife; and

      WHEREAS, the Poplar Grove Community Council reviewed the proposed name change and recommended that the name change be made; and

      WHEREAS, in its analysis of the renaming proposal, the City considered (1) the historical significance of the name; (2) the impact on the currently named individual or organization; and (3) the cost and impact of (a) changing existing signage, if any, (b) rebuilding community recognition, and (c) updating records such as letterhead, databases, and promotional materials;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, that the Jordan River Oxbow at 900 South be renamed as the “Fred & Ila Rose Fife Wetland Preserve” in recognition of and to honor the Fifes for their community service and many significant contributions that have enhanced the quality of life and well being of Salt Lake City.
