SALT LAKE CITY CORPORATION
RESOLUTION NO. 30 of 2018
JOINT RESOLUTION CALLING ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO CEASE LONG TERM DETENTION OF FAMILIES AND ANY FURTHER SEPARATION OF
DETAINED IMMIGRANT FAMILIES RESULTING FROM THE ZERO-TOLERANCE
ENFORCEMENT OF MISDEMEANOR POLICY
WHEREAS, The United States is a country of immigrants, and Salt Lake City’s immigrant community is part of the life-blood of our nation and our city, creating diversity resulting in talents and achievements which contribute to the rich history of our Country; and
WHEREAS, through its recent immigration enforcement measures, the federal government has failed to grasp the significance of immigration and refuge in this country, more specifically with the implementation of a zero tolerance policy that has resulted in the separation of countless parents and children as well as potential long term detainment of families; and
WHEREAS, this policy of separating undocumented children from their parents and potential long term detainment of families is cruel, inhumane and anti-American; in direct contradiction to the core values of the United States; and
WHEREAS, long term detainment of families creates physical and psychological effects detrimental and devastating to not only the children, but to parents as well; and
WHEREAS, evidence suggests these zero tolerance policies do not reduce northern migration.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor of Salt Lake City affirm they embrace the immigrant and refugee population in Salt Lake City and therefore opposes the zero tolerance immigration policy of separating children from parents as well as long term detainment of families.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor of Salt Lake City join with political and religious leaders urging the federal government to de-politicize the issues and implement humane and comprehensive immigration policies which will secure family unity in furtherance of the universal values of our country.
Passed by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, this 10th day of July, 2018.
