Resolution No. 30 of 2016

      Authorizing the Support of HB 5718: Central Wasatch National Conservation and Recreation Area Act.

     

WHEREAS, the Central Wasatch Mountains are a treasured natural resource containing important values of wilderness qualities, watershed health, recreation, and aesthetics of the mountains; and

WHEREAS, the Central Wasatch Mountains are the primary source of drinking water for Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake Valley’s growing urban population and are the reason the region flourishes in this arid climate; and

WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has a major interest in the water resources and the protection of the Wasatch watersheds that supply water to more than 400,000 people; and

WHEREAS, the Central Wasatch Mountains are a vital ecological unit and policies governing the unit should work together in harmony, in the interest of improving the health of the land and our watershed; and

WHEREAS, the mountain environment offers diverse recreational experiences that promote active lifestyles and enhances quality of life in the region and for Salt Lake City residents and businesses; and

WHEREAS, the Central Wasatch Mountains are an invaluable asset to the local and state economies, a beloved amenity for residents and companies that choose to locate in the region, and a key component of the state’s tourism industry; and

WHEREAS, population growth, recreation use, traffic congestions, economic development pressures, and land use conflicts threaten the future health and viability of these mountains; and

WHEREAS, public feedback from the Mountain Accord process reflected the community’s desire to protect the integrity of this iconic landscape for its ecological values, source water protection, and outstanding opportunity for dispersed and commercial recreation; and

WHEREAS, Representative Jason Chaffetz has introduced to Congress HB 5718: Central Wasatch National Conservation and Recreation Area Act, which will create the Central Wasatch National Conservation and Recreation Area, seeking to balance the need to protect drinking water, preserve recreational opportunities and traditions, enhance access, and accommodate future population growth;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, that this body supports the passage of HB 5718 in the United States Congress.
