RESOLUTION NO. 29 2013

 

(Expressing Support of Land Acquisitions

For Open Space)

 

      A resolution expressing the support of the Salt Lake City Council for land acquisitions for open space.

WHEREAS, open space is of critical importance to Salt Lake City and the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area; and

      WHEREAS, the City has had a long standing interest in acquiring and preserving open space; and

      WHEREAS, the City is aware of the possibility of acquiring approximately 0.25 acres of property located at 961 West Montague Avenue, 0.30 acres of property located at 962 West Montague Avenue, and 0.30 acres of property located at the 900 East street car stop and adjacent to the Parley’s Trail (collectively, the ”Project”); and

      WHEREAS, it has been proposed that the City support acquisition of the Project for open space; and

WHEREAS, the Montague properties will be put into use as open space adjacent to the Jordan River Parkway and the 900 E Street Car property will be developed as a trail segment of Parley’s Trail; and

      WHEREAS, in January 2013 the City’s Parks, Natural Lands, Urban Forestry and Trails Advisory Board recommended that these acquisition projects move through the Open Space acquisition process; and

WHEREAS, the City Council agrees that it would be appropriate for the City to accept future maintenance and ownership responsibilities for the Project; and

      WHEREAS, the City Council finds that this Resolution is in the best interest of the City;

NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, as follows:

      1.    The City Council hereby expresses its support for the proposed Project and the City’s accepting of future maintenance and ownership responsibilities for the Project.

      2.    The City Council hereby expresses its support for the acquisition of the Project from the current property owners using Open Space Bond Funds.

      3.    The City Council encourages the administration to complete the acquisition of the Project and at a future date facilitate a public process to determine use.

      4.    The City Council also expresses its support and expectation that the administration will continue its current efforts to foster additional community support for the project.
