JOINT RESOLUTION NO.
21 OF 2013
Resolution Recognizing Service of Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee
Whereas, the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee has been officially recognized since approximately 1984, and since that time its members worked to increase ridership and make bicycling safer and more convenient and accessible in Salt Lake City; and
Whereas, Ron Yengich, Stephen Harmon, Gregory Williams, Dan Mayhew, Rob Macleod, Chris Quann, Mark Smedley, Brian Price, Jason Bultman, Lou Melini, Dave Iltis, and Polly Hart were all committed leaders when they each served on this committee over its 29 year history; and
Whereas, hundreds of bicyclists and advocates of cycling have provided invaluable input and volunteer time to the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee advocating for the development of bicycle routes and infrastructure including the creation of the first Salt Lake City Bicycle Master Plan, working for the rights of bicyclists, and educating motorists and bicyclists to promote mutual awareness and safety; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee was instrumental in Salt Lake City’s application to the League of American Bicyclist’s Bicycle Friendly Community program which resulted in Salt Lake City first being awarded a bronze, and later, a Silver Bicycle Friendly Community designation; and
Whereas, Salt Lake City, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee, dedicated resources to hold the first Utah Bike Summit held in Salt Lake City in May, 2009, which has become an annual event; and
Whereas, increased bicycle usage in the City is supported by the City Council’s Economic Health of the City, Neighborhood Quality of Life, Sustainability and Transportation & Mobility Philosophy Statements and the Mayor’s Livability Initiative.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
that the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor of Salt Lake City recognize and express appreciation to the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee and all members who have served throughout its long history for their countless hours of service and devotion to promoting increased and safe bicycle ridership in Salt Lake City.
