RESOLUTION NO. 16 2016
(Expressing Support of Land Acquisition for Open Space
and Spending of Open Space Bond Funds)
A resolution expressing the support of the Salt Lake City Council for land acquisition for open space and spending of Open Space Bond Funds.
WHEREAS, open space is of critical importance to Salt Lake City and the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area; and
WHEREAS, the City has had a long standing interest in acquiring and preserving open space; and
WHEREAS, the City is aware of the possibility of acquiring approximately 165 acres of property located at 1601 N City Creek Canyon, 70 acres of property located at 1065 E North Bonneville Drive, 0.35 acres of property located at 1250 S 900 W, 0.46 acres of property located at 1743 E Rosecrest Drive, 1.5 acres of property located at 1370 N Beck Street, 7.4 acres of property located at 3070 – 3094 E Kennedy Drive, 80 acres of property located at 2401 Red Butte Canyon Road, and 26 acres of property located at 3008 N 2200 W (collectively, the “Acquisition Project”); and
WHEREAS, it has been proposed that the City support spending of Open Space Bond Funds for the Acquisition Project for open space; and
WHEREAS, the properties comprising the Acquisition Project will be developed for open space purposes and to benefit the community; and
WHEREAS, having the properties comprising the Acquisition Project become public land, held and maintained in the Parks and Public Lands open space portfolio, will provide community and ecological benefits to the residents of Salt Lake City; and
WHEREAS, on December 17, 2015 the City’s Parks, Natural Lands, Urban Forestry and Trails Advisory Board recommended that the Acquisition Project move through the open space acquisition process; and
WHEREAS, the City Council agrees that it would be appropriate for the City to accept future maintenance and ownership responsibilities for the Acquisition Project; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds that this Resolution is in the best interest of the City;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, as follows:
1. The City Council hereby expresses its support for the proposed Acquisition Project and the City’s accepting of future maintenance, management, and ownership responsibilities for the Acquisition Project.
2. The City Council hereby expresses its support for the Acquisition Project using Open Space Bond Funds.
3. The City Council encourages the administration to complete the Acquisition Project and at a future date facilitate a public process to determine use, where appropriate.
4. The City Council also expresses its support and expectation that the administration will continue its current efforts to foster additional community support for the Acquisition Project and long-term stewardship.
