SALT LAKE CITY ORDINANCE

No. 75 of 2012

(An ordinance amending section 21A.46.120 of the Salt Lake City Code, creating a localized alternative sign overlay for Library Square)

 

     An ordinance amending section 21A.46.120 of the Salt Lake City Code pursuant to Petition No. PLNPCM2011-00451 to create a localized alternative sign overlay for Library Square.

WHEREAS, the Salt Lake City Planning Commission (“planning commission”) held a public hearing on May 9, 2012 to consider a request made by Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker (Petition No. PLNPCM2011-00451) to amend section 21A.46.120 (Zoning: Signs: Sign Regulations for Special Purpose Districts) of the Salt Lake City Code to create a localized alternative sign overlay for Library Square; and

     WHEREAS, at its May 9, 2012 hearing, the planning commission voted to transmit a positive recommendation to the Salt Lake City Council (“city council”) on said application; and

     WHEREAS, after a public hearing on this matter the city council has determined that adopting this ordinance is in the city’s best interests.

 

     NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:

SECTION 1. Adopting section 21A.46.120.E.4.c of Salt Lake City Code.  That section 21A.46.120 of the Salt Lake City Code (Zoning: Signs: Sign Regulations for Special Purpose Districts), shall be, and hereby is, amended to add a new subsection 21A.46.120.E.4.c, which shall appear and read as follows:

c.      Library Square Located on the Block Between 400 South and 500 South Between 200 East and 300 East Streets:

Notes:

1.   For height limits on building signs, see subsection 21A.46.070.J of this chapter.

2.   Special event signs may hang during the entirety of a special event and may be installed three weeks prior to the event. Special event signage shall be removed from the building within seven days of the end of the event.

3.   Amount only allowed on buildings where the majority of the building houses a museum. For those buildings where the majority of the building is utilized as a library only 25 % (twenty-five percent) of the building may be covered with this type of signage. Signs shall only advertise for on premise activities and events.

4.   Special event light pole signs must not act as a barrier to pedestrian movement and must advertise for events on premises. They shall not extend more than 18 (eighteen) inches from the light pole and shall not extend higher than the light poles. Signs shall only advertise for on premise activities and events.

5.   Amount only allowed on buildings where the majority of the building houses a museum. For those buildings where the majority of the building is utilized as a library these types of signs are not allowed.

 

SECTION 2. Effective Date.  This ordinance shall become effective on the date of its first publication.
