SALT LAKE CITY ORDINANCE
No. 74 of 2018
(Requirement to identify and mark the location of water and sewer laterals and storm drains)
An ordinance amending Chapter 14.32 of the Salt Lake City Code to identify and mark the location of all water and sewer laterals and storm drains when performing construction activities in the public way.
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City Corporation (the “City”) has enacted ordinances governing construction in the public way; and
WHEREAS, the City desires to protect water and sewer laterals and storm drains from damage during construction and excavation in the public way.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.Adopting Section 14.32.085(B)(7) of Salt Lake City Code. That Chapter 14.32 of the Salt Lake City Code (Streets, Sidewalks and Public Places: Construction, Excavation and Obstructions in the Public Right of Way), shall be, and hereby is, amended to adopt a new Section 14.32.085(B)(7), which shall read as follows:
14.32.085(B): EXCAVATION RESTRICTIONS
7. Before performing directional boring or other excavation in the public way, an excavator must do the following with respect to every sewer and water lateral and storm drain that is located within the length of the proposed excavation site when the proposed excavation is more than 24” deep: (a) locate each lateral and drain, either by a nondestructive sensing method or by potholing, and (b) physically mark the location of each lateral and drain. This section shall not affect an excavator’s liability for damage to a sewer or water lateral or storm drain in connection with a boring or excavation operation.
SECTION 2. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall become effective on the date of its first publication.
