City Council Announcements

March 4th, 2014

1.   Quality Growth Commission

Søren Simonsen’s retirement from the City Council left a vacancy on the Quality Growth Commission. Commission members are appointed by the Governor. The current commission is a mix of people from the development and real estate business sectors, cattlemen, farmers, county commissioners and city council members.

The Utah League of Cities and Towns forwards names to the Governor to consider making an appointment to the Quality Growth Commission. Having one’s name forwarded by the Utah League does not guarantee an appointment to the commission.

Ø Would Council Members like to have their names sent to the Utah League of Cities and Towns to forward to the Governor’s Office for consideration of being appointed to the Quality Growth Commission?

According to the commission’s website, “Though the Commission holds no regulatory authority, it does have responsibilities in three broad areas:

1.     Provide local governments with planning assistance, training, and incentives for implementation of quality growth principles and initiatives.

2.    Administer the LeRay McAllister Critical Land Conservation Fund.

3.    Recommend Principles of Quality Growth, how to define Quality Growth Areas, and advise the Legislature and Governor on growth management issues.”

Council Members Mendenhall and James volunteered to have their names forwarded to the Governor to serve on the Quality Growth Commission.

2.  Request for Amendments to City Code relating to Fire Department

1.   Making the definition and the parameters of a recreational fire consistent with the international fire code .

2.  Third-party reporting system requiring that the reports are submitted to Salt Lake City Fire via a cloud-based platform.

Ø Are the Council Members ok with this concept? A transmittal will be forth coming.

Council Members were unsure what these amendments were for.  Jennifer Bruno and Margaret Plane said they would get more information for the Council.

Councilmember LaMalfa wanted to know if the cloud-based third-party reporting system could be used for all the complaints.  Ms. Bruno said she would get more information.

3.  Transient Camp Clean up Interlocal Agreement and Resolution needs Council Sponsor

The Transient Camp Cleanup and Interlocal Agreement authorizes the approval of an interlocal cooperation agreement between Salt Lake City Corporation and Salt Lake County with respect to the cleanup of transient camps in Salt Lake City

Ø Would any Council Member like to be the Sponsor for this Resolution?

Councilmember Penfold said he would be the sponsor for this resolution.
